5 Killed After Bus Collides With Pole on California Highway

Five people were killed after a charter bus collided with a freeway sign pole early this morning in Livingston, California, a town between Sacramento and Fresno.

About 30 people were on board. Six other people suffered major injuries, including the driver, the highway patrol said.

The collision happened around 3:30 a.m. local time on Highway 99 as the bus headed from Mexico to Washington, the California Highway Patrol said. The bus had stopped in Los Angeles Monday night, with the next planned stop in Livingston.

The northbound side of the highway was closed down as emergency crews extricated people from the bus.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are headed to the scene.
